Braces are a big step in life. Braces can help you have a more attractive smile, and there are oral health benefits that come with having braces. While your braces do the work of aligning your teeth, you will need to work a little harder to make sure that they remain clean.

You and your orthodontist will be seeing quite a bit of each other in the months to come. However you should also keep your appointments with your dentist for your regular cleanings and exams. Even with your braces on, your teeth can still accumulate plaque and bacteria which can lead to gum disease and tooth decay.

You should make time to brush your teeth at least three times day, particularly after meals. Before you brush, rinse your mouth with water to loosen any food particles stuck in your braces. You should brush along the gumline first, followed by the tops of your brackets, and then the bottoms and the wire. Don’t get in a hurry, and try brushing two or three teeth at a time.

With the hardware in your mouth, flossing is very important. It may take a little work learning to floss with braces in, and if you have problems, try using a soft pick, a water flosser or a floss threader.

If you have been thinking about getting braces, our orthodontist, Dr. Claudia Torok would love to see you for an exam, and to discuss your options with you.
